Bernie Ecclestone believes the financial crisis and the resulting lack of sponsors in Formula 1 will make it difficult for all four of the sport’s new teams to make the start line for the first race of the season in Bahrain on March 14.

Campos Meta, Lotus, USF1 and Virgin Racing are all working hard to have their cars for ready of the 2010 season-opener in two months’ time, and have all denied previous suggestions by Ecclestone – F1’s commercial rights holder – that they will not make it.

But speaking at a Ferrari media event in Italy, Ecclestone remained sceptical about the new teams’ chances.

“I think they’re going to have trouble actually getting to the first race, so now we have to wait and see,” he said.

“Obviously when you speak to these people they say everything’s fine and there’s no drama. But I’m sure there is drama.

“There’s one small problem: finance. It’s difficult for these teams, even with the budgets becoming more realistic, to raise that sort of money.

“You’ve probably heard about it, but we’ve got a bit of a financial crisis in the world, so there’s not quite as many sponsors floating around as there were.”

However, he added: “We’re OK – as long as we’ve got 10 solid, strong teams that’s all we really need.”
