International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge will meet the chairman and chief executive of the United States Olympic Committee in February to improve the troubled relationship that led to Chicago’s embarrassing defeat for the 2016 Olympics.
The Associated Press reports that Rogge will meet USOC chairman Larry Probst and new chief executive Scott Blackmun at the Winter Games in Vancouver.
Rogge said: “There is a lot of goodwill on both sides. The IOC wishes to have a very good relationship with what is still today the No 1 national Olympic committee in terms of results.
“I’ve heard and read very good things about the intention of Scott Blackmun and Larry Probst to better engage USOC in the mainstream of international activities.
“We will discuss the common issues. How can USOC participate stronger in the Olympic movement? What do we expect from USOC and vice-versa?”
It has been reported that USOC is considering making a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics in an effort to repair the organisation’s international standing after its last-place finish in the 2016 race that was eventually won by Rio de Janeiro.
When asked about the speculation, Rogge added: “I would say in general I always welcome bids emanating from well organised countries.”
