Frank Warren has called on the BBC to take more of an interest in boxing.
The promoter says it is an exciting time for the sport but that with the demise of Setanta and the financial problems at ITV, television viewers are missing out.
“Talent-wise, it is the best it has been for many, many years,” Warren said. “The problem we have is getting people to see the talent. With Setanta going bust, ITV out of it and the BBC not giving a toss, Sky is the only game in town. Fortunately, Barney Francis, the head of sport at Sky, is a huge boxing fan but we do need other television companies coming in.
“I hope after the general election, the next minister of sport will ask questions of the BBC and ask what they are doing with the licence fee. They spent a fortune on Formula 1 racing when there was no one else bidding for it. Boxing has been one of the most popular sports [on television].”
