Philip Morris set to stick with Ferrari
 20/01/2010

Philip Morris is set to renew its long-running sponsorship deal with the Ferrari Formula 1 team when it expires at the end of next year.

It had been thought that the title sponsorship would pass to Santander but the respected Joe Saward Grand Prix Blog claims that Philip Morris has managed to integrate the Spanish bank into the portfolio without giving up the title sponsorship.

Although legally Ferrari cannot use Philip Morris’s Marlboro branding in many places (and actually no longer uses it on its cars), the team’s official name remains Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro.

Philip Morris is one of the oldest sponsors in F1, having first entered the sport in 1972 with the BRM team. Marlboro was also involved with Frank Williams’s Iso and in 1974 agreed a sponsorship with McLaren which continued until 1996.

Marlboro also signed a deal with Ferrari in the late 1970s which gradually increased in size until 1997 when the brand decided to concentrate all of its resources on the Italian team.
