The Haitian Football Federation (HFF) lost at least 30 members in last week’s earthquake, it has been announced.
HFF president Dr Jean Bart confirmed the deaths and said that at least 20 more members were buried in the rubble as of yesterday (Jan 19). A number of HFF committee meetings were taking place when the quake struck.
Caribbean Football Union (CFU) senior vice-president Horace Burrell visited the ravaged island at the weekend at the request of Fifa vice-president Jack Warner.
Burrell said: “On arrival we were met by a delegation from the Haitian federation led by an injured Dr Bart, who was wounded with cuts and bruises all over his body.
"It was evident from the bandages and wounds that he had a miraculous escape, but several others who were with him at a committee meeting were not so lucky and perished within seconds of the earthquake." Dr Bart is believed to have been the only survivor of that meeting.
Fifa has donated US$250,000 to the relief effort in Haiti, while one of the organisation’s vice-presidents, Chung Moon-Jung of Hyundai, has pledged US$500,000 of his own money. Warner has also donated US$100,000 of his own funds.
"The football community stands in solidarity with Haiti,” added Warner. “As our brothers and sisters face their darkest hour, we must let them know that they are not alone.”
