The Australian Football Federation (FFA) has said that it will work to build closer ties with World Cup bidding rival Indonesia.
The FFA – which is bidding to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 – has signed an agreement with the Indonesian FA (PSSI) – which wants to stage the event in 2022 – aimed at developing football in Indonesia and helping Australia’s transition from a member of Oceania into the Asian Football Confederation.
World Football Insider reports that under the five-year agreement, the FFA will assist the PSSI in coaching development, grassroots football, women’s football and player development.
In return, the PSSI will help the FFA integrate into the Asian football community and the Association of South East Asian Football Federation. Australia only joined the Asian Football Confederation in 2006.
FFA chairman Frank Lowy said: "This is a landmark agreement with one of our closest neighbours that will see the game in both countries benefit enormously by the sharing of technical knowledge and experience.
"We also believe that football and our federations can be important vehicles to assist in the development of relations between our two countries and their governments."
