Chief executive of Munich’s 2018 Winter Olympic bid Willy Bogner has invited the German Alpine Association (DAV) to a “summit” to discuss the organisation’s environmental concerns over the bid.
The DAV threatened to pull its support for the campaign to bring the Winter Games to Germany unless the bid became more environmentally friendly.
DAV president Heinz Rohle said on Monday (Jan 18) that not only should the events themselves be planned with the environment in mind, but there should be a clear concept as to how the Games would affect the region once they are over.
He added that if there was no progress on this issue by the end of this year, the DAV would pull out of the bid.
But bid officials have invited Rohle to a meeting of the Munich 2018 Environmental Group next week to discuss the situation in detail.
Munich 2018 claims that since the initial presentation of the 18 bid projects to various organisations in October 2009, the environmental aspects of the bid have been "significantly" strengthened, with the Deutsche Sporthochschule (German Sports University) and the Oko-Insittut (Ecological Institute) used to verify the projects and finalise the plans.
