Zimbabwe targets World Cup boost
 22/01/2010

Zimbabwe is planning to cash in on the World Cup taking place in neighbouring South Africa this summer.

The country’s tourism ministry is seeking treasury approval for a $70m plan to make sure that Zimbabwe benefits from the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region in June and July.

Minister Walter Mzembi said: “We have received a budget proposal of $70m from various ministries and we have asked them to come up with projects that can be completed around March.”

Five million dollars is earmarked for "an extensive media campaign to advertise our tourist facilities to the outside world" and one million dollars to set up fun parks for visitors.

"We want to create an atmosphere away from the match venues to connect the people to the event," added Mzembi.

Two million will go towards training police officers, branding and transport.
Other projects include improving water and power supplies, upgrading health and telecommunication services, and securing computers for the immigration department to avoid congestion at border posts.

"We are also going to set aside funds for hosting teams that might want to stay in Zimbabwe during the tournament,” continued Mzembi. “The money will cover the transport and security for the teams."
