Russia’s World Cup bid has appointed former Fifa head of communications Markus Siegler as a “special adviser”.
He joins Andreas Herren, a former director of communications at Fifa, who is in charge of the campaign’s international media effort.
Siegler, who left Fifa at the end of September 2007, had previously provided advice to England’s World Cup bid team.
“I would describe that I am going to advise the bid committee in all matters,” Siegler told World Football Insider (WFI) about his new position with Russia. “Special duties, questions and advice that they need – I would say that is my role.”
Siegler is well-connected in world football circles and the Russia bid is likely to use his expertise at “functions and events overseas”, a source told WFI.
One of Siegler’s first trips will be to Angola for the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations. He will join a high-level delegation that includes Russia bid chief executive Alexei Sorokin and Alexander Djordjadze, the director of bid planning and operations.
“I know a lot of people, of course, and it will be nice to meet and greet – that’s normal,” added Siegler.
“As far as I know, the Qatar bid committee will do some sort of presentation – they have bought the rights. But we are admitted as a bloc.”
