Stephen Fry, the writer, actor and broadcaster, has been approached to take on an ambassadorial role in the run up to London 2012.
The specifics of Fry’s role have yet to be finalised but he could be involved in producing promotional videos, voiceovers and guides for tourists.
The collaboration came about as a result of a chance meeting between Fry – who lives in London – and a member of Locog, the Games organising committee, at a private function.
A spokesman for Locog said: "They got into conversation about how enthusiastic he is about the Games, at which point we said we would love to sit down and talk.
"We're looking into giving him a tour of the Olympic Park so he can get a feel for the progress we've been making.
"We hope to have discussions about what the role will involve, but we're really pleased he's interested and would love to have him on board. He is a very creative person."
Fry told the London Evening Standard: "I genuinely don't know exactly what it will involve.
"I've been asked if I could fit in a meeting with some people from the Olympics but I have no idea what they are going to ask me. All I can say is that I'm really supportive.
"I'm really passionately behind [the Olympics] and I can't bear that there is already a groundswell of cynicism that it's all going to be disastrous.
"It's the largest regular gathering of human beings on the planet and we're going to host it. It's going to be fantastic."
