The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is looking to breathe new life into the sport by revamping its Super Series format and increasing prize money.
The 12-leg Super Series would get a new top tier of four elite tournaments under the proposals. Tier one events would have a minimum prize fund of $400,000 and tier two competitions a minimum of $200,000.
BWF deputy president Paisarn Rangsikitpho said: "The first tier may consist of three or four Opens. These tournaments will offer lucrative prize money and we will look into a professional way to run the even.
"Our findings on the Super Series over the last three years showed that there were some inconsistencies. Our findings also showed that there is a trend of top players not participating in the Super Series.
"We will come out with a guideline and create rules to penalise them if we find that their reason for pulling out is not justified."
Rangsikitpho added that a final decision on a format change would be taken in March.
