Coe optimistic over 2012 ticket sales
 27/01/2010

London 2012 chief Lord Coe has played down suggestions that the global financial crisis will affect attendances at the Games.

About nine million tickets will go on sale for the Olympics and Paralympics next year, but there are fears that the downturn could hit sales after several big sporting events revealed recently they were struggling to sell out, particularly in the area of corporate hospitality.

However, Coe said that London was determined to avoid a repeat of the empty seats witnessed at many events at Beijing 2008.

"I don't for one minute doubt we will have anything other than full stadia in this country," Coe told Reuters.

"People 'get' sport whether it is at corporate level or whether it is among ordinary families like myself.

“Our objective is very clear. We want full stadia with tickets where possible at affordable prices."

Coe also insisted that any change in Government after this year’s general election would not have an impact on the organisation of the Games.

London 2012 has been a Labour Party project but Coe pointed to the smooth transition following the change of London mayor in 2008 and added that organisers would continue to deliver "irrespective of who their political masters were”.

"The project was business as usual the following day," he continued. "Whatever happens in [the] May [election], I think we have politically worked across the spectrum. I see very little change."
