The Holland-Belgium World Cup bid has welcomed Sepp Blatter’s comments about countries co-hosting major tournaments.
The Fifa president said at the end of last week that history has shown that jointly hosted events can be a “great success”, pointing to the European championships in 2000 (Holland-Belgium) and 2008 (Austria-Switzerland).
Harry Been, chief executive of the Holland-Belgium World Cup bid, said: “I’m glad that Blatter has reiterated this point, stating that joint bids have the same or even a better chance than an individual bid.
“Our message is clear and we’re communicating this with total confidence. Experience gained during the UEFA Euro 2000 championships and the accessibility of our host cities could be vital.
“What’s more, we stand for appealing football, contributions to the development of football worldwide and using football to make the world a better place.”
Spain and Portugal are also mounting a joint bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
