Brazilian legend Zico is to become an ambassador for Japan’s World Cup bid.
He has strong links with Japanese football having coached the national team at the 2006 World Cup, and joins the likes of Nagoya Grampus manager and former Yugoslavia international Dragan Stojkovic as one of seven ambassadors for the campaign to host the tournament in 2018 or 2022.
Espanyol's Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura, the country’s most prominent overseas player, will also support the bid and Japan Football Association president Motoaki Inukai said: “It makes us feel very confident to have such people, who symbolise Japanese football, as ambassadors for our World Cup campaign.
“With their affection and enthusiasm for Japanese football, I believe our ambassadors will help boost the atmosphere in the country and support our campaign as necessary.”
