Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi has predicted that this year’s event in Delhi will boost the popularity of alternative sports in India.
Cricket is the most popular sport in the country, but Kalmadi thinks that the Games – which take place in October – will give Indian sports fans a host of new options.
"Cricket is a very popular sport in India,” he said. “But I think the Commonwealth Games will provide a boost to the development of Olympic sports infrastructure in the country.
"Cricket is played in only 10-12 countries while Olympic sports are played in nearly 200 countries. I hope because of the Commonwealth Games people look towards Olympic sports also.”
