Qatar World Cup bid chief executive Hassan al-Thawadi believes that awarding the tournament to the Middle East for the first time would help improve international relations with the region.
Like Africa, which is hosting its first World Cup this summer, al-Thawadi wants Qatar to use the “power of football as a vehicle for hope and understanding”.
He told the Confederation of African Football Congress: “We believe that 2022 could prove to be a defining moment, not just for Qatar but for the people of the entire Middle East and the international community, as the Fifa World Cup would be a powerful catalyst to building bridges between countries and cultures around the world.”
Qatar, he said, was a small nation “with a big heart and huge ambition”, and it carried “the hopes and dreams of millions of people across the Middle East”.
Meanwhile, Cameroon legend Roger Milla has been announced as an ambassador for the Qatar bid, joining the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Ronald de Boer.
