Fifa has vowed to clamp down on websites that illegally use its trademarks in the run up to the World Cup.
Law firm Spoor and Fisher, which handles trademark infringements for world football’s governing body, has already brought almost 50 websites to Fifa’s attention – all of which have been taken down before legal action was necessary.
Technology news site IT Web quotes Owen Dean, a partner at Spoor and Fisher, as saying: “Some are blatant and there is no argument at all.”
The words “2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa” and combinations of those words are trademarked. The organisation’s main concern, added Dean, is sites trying to benefit from games, such as offering 2010 accommodation. Companies that want to offer accommodation must be registered with Fifa's Match service.
Ambush marketing is also an issue Fifa is taking seriously. “As time gets closer, everybody tries to jump on the bandwagon,” Dean continued. “Fifa has an obligation and a strong interest in protecting the interests of the sponsors.”
