Organisers of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver have vowed that protesters will not be allowed to disrupt the Games, which begin on Friday (Feb 12).
The event has become a focal point for a number of groups planning a “convergence” on the city to demonstrate against the corporate greed and injustice they believe the Olympic movement has come to symbolise.
Vancouver 2010 deputy chief executive Dave Cobb said: “We expect that protests may occur [and] security forces are ready to react in case they break the law.”
There have also been claims the Winter Olympics is being partly held on land that belongs to Canada's aboriginal people.
But Olympic organisers (VANOC) point out that local aboriginal groups are supporting the event as co-hosts.
"We have to accept the protests," IOC vice-president Thomas Bach told Reuters. "They [VANOC] reported that some groups in the city are considering protesting but I do not think they will be big protests and they are not a concern for us.
"It is their right to express their opinions and we welcome it but the protest must remain within the framework of not affecting the opening ceremony and the Games."
