Organisers have promised that athletes will have a painless commute if badminton and rhythmic gymnastics are moved to Wembley Arena for the London 2012 Olympics.
The events were supposed to take place at a specially constructed temporary facility near the Olympic Village in East London, but organisers want to move them to Wembley to cut costs.
Officials from both sports raised concerns about the travelling time between the athletes’ accommodation and the venue, but the Daily Telegraph reports that it will take just 41 minutes using special Olympic lanes and “vigilant policing”.
The 17-mile trip usually takes between 50 minutes and an hour if the traffic is light, but an Olympic source told the paper: "There have been promises made of vigilant policing of the Olympic lanes to make that time [41 minutes] achievable.”
The move to Wembley has been agreed in principle, although final proposals will be discussed at meetings in the coming weeks.
International Badminton Federation chief operating officer Thomas Lund said that recent talks with 2012 organisers had been productive.
"There is further work to be done to overcome some of the challenges to ensure the athletes have the best conditions to compete in 2012 but we are all working and hoping to reach a satisfactory conclusion,” he added.
