Virgin Group chairman Sir Richard Branson has revealed he would consider sponsoring Britain's America's Cup outfit Team Origin in the future.
Branson, a keen sailor, said: "At the moment the British team have got funding. If the funding were to drop out, who knows – we may have a Virgin Red in one of the future yachting races.”
Team Origin cannot take part in the 33rd America's Cup which is taking place in Valencia because the event defaulted to a head-to-head between US team Oracle and defending Swiss champions Alinghi after the two sides failed to agree on the rules for a conventional regatta involving several teams.
Branson said he hoped the Cup, sailing's oldest trophy, would return to its traditional format next time around so that Team Origin and other syndicates could take part, reports the Daily Telegraph.
"Hopefully after this, we will see eight, nine, 10 countries participating and we will get the America's Cup to how it should be with lots of different nations participating," he added.
