The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced it will open an office in Africa to help grow the sport in the region.
Recently appointed vice-president of development for the NBA in Africa Amadou Gallo Fall will head up the office, which will open in the spring in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Fall, an executive for the Dallas Mavericks for the last 12 years, will work with local federations in Africa to develop NBA grassroots events and expand its partnerships with marketing, media and consumer products companies.
NBA commissioner David Stern said: “There is tremendous potential to grow the game in Africa and the opening of an NBA office will help us expand our business in the region.
“We have conducted ‘Basketball Without Borders Africa’ [a basketball camp for young people] since 2003 and with a presence on the ground, we can enhance our ability to increase our social responsibility efforts and develop more activities to engage our fans.”
