BBC to launch sport app for mobile phones
 18/02/2010

The BBC is launching a free mobile phone application that will offer live coverage and goals on demand from this summer’s World Cup.

The corporation will make news and sport apps available for the iPhone first, followed by the BlackBerry and Android operating systems. The sport app will be launched in May.

As well as what is broadcast on TV, users of the BBC Sport app will be able to access content from BBC Radio 5 Live, and live text commentaries from BBC presenters and blogs.

The 2010/11 English football season, Formula 1 and coverage of other sports will be added later in the year.

While the UK version of the sport app will be free, the global version will be released separately by BBC Worldwide and, in line with other international BBC Worldwide services, will feature advertising.

Announcing the apps in a keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress, the BBC’s director of future media and technology Erik Huggers said: "Licence fee payers are increasingly using sophisticated handheld devices to access information.

"They tell us that they want to access the digital service that they have paid for at a time and place that suits them."
