US rules out 2020 Olympic bid
 22/02/2010

The United States will not bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games after admitting that it needs to improve its relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Chicago was dumped out in the first round of voting for the 2016 Games, which were eventually awarded to Rio, while New York lost out to London in the race to stage the 2012 Olympics.

The Washington Post quoted US Olympic Committee (USOC) spokesman Patrick Sandusky as saying: “At this time, there's certainly no plans for 2020. Right now our focus is on other things, not just bidding.

"We don't have to look much farther than what happened in the last two bid races. We have to focus our attention elsewhere. It may mean developing strong relationships with the IOC or having time to do other things".

USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun added over the weekend: “The cold and hard reality is Chicago spent approximately $80m on its bid.

“It's going to be difficult to get US cities to continue to invest to that level unless they think they have a realistic chance of winning. The [IOC] sent us a message, loud and clear, that they don't want the Games to be in the United States.

"Unless we get some signs from the IOC, I think it's highly unlikely we would mount a bid on our own initiative.”

It emerged over the weekend that USOC chairman Larry Probst personally met with 32 of the IOC's 100-plus officials recently, describing discussions as “cordial and constructive".
