Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke has revealed that world football’s governing body will not limit the race to host the 2018 World Cup to European countries.
Sepp Blatter, the Fifa president, indicated last month that the idea had been discussed, saying that it would “make the work of Fifa easier and especially that of the executive committee”.
But Valcke has confirmed that it will be up to the countries bidding to stage the competition to decide whether to try for 2018, 2022 or both.
England and Russia have applied separately to stage the 2018 and/or the 2022 World Cup, while Spain-Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium have made joint bids for one or both.
Australia, the United States and Japan have also bid for the 2018 and/or 2022 tournament, and South Korea, Indonesia and Qatar have all applied to host only the 2022 event.
Valcke said: “We will not ask the Fifa executive committee to make a decision on having only European countries bidding for 2018.
“That is up to the associations who are bidding for the World Cup. They need to make up their mind in terms of what they are bidding for. If, in the end, only European associations bid for 2018, then that’s their decision.”
