Swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, has been unveiled as the first official ambassador of the Youth Olympic Games.
The 14-time Olympic gold medallist will support the Games by encouraging the involvement of young people around the world.
The inaugural Youth Olympic Games will be held this summer in Singapore and Phelps said: “The Youth Olympic Games is an excellent initiative, not only for the athletes competing, but also those who are inspired to get into sport and be more active.
“I am delighted that I have been given the opportunity to become the first official ambassador of the Youth Olympic Games, and can’t wait to get working with the YOG team to promote the first event this summer.”
Meanwhile, Phelps has signed a three-year endorsement deal with sportswear manufacturer Under Armour.
He will continue to wear Speedo swimsuits and goggles in the pool, but will feature in adverts for Under Armour and will also wear the company’s apparel away from the sport.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the agreement is thought to be worth at least $7.5m.
Phelps also revealed last week that he will retire from swimming when he turns 30, making London 2012 his last Olympics. Phelps will be 27 at the London Games.
