The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) is looking into the possibility of building a new floodlit circuit to host the Australian Grand Prix, it has been claimed.
With Formula 1’s commercial rights chief Bernie Ecclestone keen for more night races in the Far East and possibly Australia for the benefit of European viewers, CAMS is understood to have been granted $130,000 in funding by the FIA to look into building a $200m permanent circuit in the Melbourne suburb of Avalon.
The new venue would replace Albert Park, which has a contract to host the race until 2015.
However, Victoria sports minister James Merlino said: "A decision to relocate the race is ultimately up to government, regardless of CAMS's findings."
