ITV has won the rights to show the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Britain.
The broadcaster will show 59 of the 60 matches from the third edition of the tournament – which begins on March 12 – on ITV4. Sony will provide the live world feed and ITV will employ its own studio experts.
The IPL has been without a British broadcaster since the collapse of Setanta last year, while ITV has not shown cricket since the 1970s.
Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, told the Daily Telegraph: "This is a hugely significant deal for the IPL and ideally suited to the British passion for both cricket and entertainment."
In recent years, live cricket has only been shown on satellite broadcaster Sky but the ITV deal will see the sport return to terrestrial television. The England and Wales Cricket Board is currently fighting plans to make the Ashes available on a free-to-air channel.
This year’s IPL will also be streamed live on YouTube after Modi signed an innovative deal with the video-sharing website.
