The president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Leonid Tyagachev has resigned after the country’s dismal performance at the Winter Olympics, according to reports.
Russia, traditionally one of the strongest countries in the Winter Games, won just three gold medals – its worst showing in the history of the event – compared to 14 for hosts Canada.
The fact that Russia will stage the next Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 made its performance in Vancouver all the more embarrassing.
Earlier this week, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev called on the country’s senior sports officials to resign and said if anyone was reluctant to go “we will help them”.
The Itar-Tass news agency quoted a spokesman for the ROC as saying Tyagachev had submitted a letter of resignation.
Former sports and tourism minister Tyagachev was appointed president of the ROC in 2001 and played a key role in winning the 2014 Games for Russia.
