Munich 2018 chief executive Willy Bogner believes the success of the German team at the Vancouver Games, combined with massive television audiences at home, will have boosted the city’s chances of hosting the Winter Olympics in eight years’ time.
Germany finished second in the Vancouver medals table, winning 10 golds, while almost 11 million TV viewers watched Magdalena Neuner win double gold in the women’s biathlon.
And Bogner hopes that will help Munich become the first city to stage the Summer and Winter Games.
"Germany's incredible passion for winter sport and the Olympic Games has been reflected both on the podium and back home,” he said. “However, medal successes and high TV figures are only part of our Olympic offer.
"The friendliness of the fans and volunteers seen in Vancouver is also central to Munich's vision for the Olympic Movement.
"We aim to combine the famed friendliness and hospitality of Bavaria with the national passion for winter sport.”
