The USPGA’s famous Heritage tournament will go ahead next year with or without a sponsor, organisers have said.
Tournament director Steve Wilmot has revealed that money is available to fund the event beyond 2010 – the last year communications giant Verizon will be its main sponsor.
"I can assure you we'll have an event in 2011," he said. "In 2012, who knows? Everything's on the table."
Verizon announced in September that it wanted to spread its involvement across several golf tournaments, rather than focus exclusively on the Heritage, which is played at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.
"Relationships must end at times," Wilmot added. “Business does change. We understand."
Wilmot is looking for a company to replace Verizon which he says would need to pay about $8m for the title sponsorship.
But he admitted that could be difficult because of the financial climate: "It's a tough time out there. We're looking at all different possibilities."
