Sony Ericsson renews tennis deal – but loses naming rights
 08/03/2010

Sony Ericsson has extended its sponsorship deal with women’s tennis, but will no longer have naming rights to the WTA Tour.

The mobile phone manufacturer confirmed it has signed a two-year extension to its bumper $88m contract which was due to expire at the end of this year.

However, it will now be ‘lead global sponsor’, rather than title sponsor, and the competition’s official name will revert to the WTA Tour later this year.

Sony Ericsson will retain net signage at the Tour’s 53 tournaments and get “significant television and digital media rights” under the new agreement.

“Sony Ericsson has been an incredible partner for the last five years and this extension is both a real sign of strength and stability, and a testament to the investment value delivered by our players and tournaments,” said Stacey Allaster, chairman and chief executive of the WTA Tour.

“We are very pleased that Sony Ericsson will remain our partner and we look forward to continuing to deliver to fans and taking women’s tennis and Sony Ericsson to new heights through our joint vision for the future of the sport.”
