Rome and Venice have both submitted their bids for the 2020 Olympic Games to the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).
Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno played down the rivalry between the two cities when submitting the Italian capital’s bid.
He said: “We were keen to make our bids together to show that Rome and Venice are competing on loyal terms – in, I dare say, the Olympic spirit.”
Rome hosted the Summer Games in 1960 but lost out to Athens in 2004. It has said that it intends to use some of its existing structures, including the 1960 Olympic Stadium, as well as building new ones.
Venice, meanwhile, could have a problem with space on its islands so would use parts of the mainland to host events if its bid was successful.
CONI is expected to choose between the two cities in May, before the International Olympic Committee makes a decision on the 2020 host next year.
