ESPN has revealed it will not cut its subscription rates for next season even though it loses half its 46 live Premier League games this summer.

ESPN paid an estimated £90m to pick up the remaining year of Setanta’s Premier League contract when the Irish broadcaster went bust, but it will lose half its matches next season as a new £159m deal kicks in.

John Skipper, ESPN's executive vice-president for content, told Bloomberg: "I don't anticipate we'll change price point. It's clearly the signature product. Having 46 games this year was a real luxury.

“We'll have to supplement the 23 important games next year. There's no question the English Premier League remains the premier product for us.”

The price that consumers pay depends on individual platform operators, but BSkyB is likely to continue to charge between £9 and £12 and its rivals between £5 and £10 if ESPN sticks with its current rates.

ESPN has also recently signed deals to show FA Cup football and Guinness Premiership rugby.
