Manchester United has signed a five-year sponsorship deal with communications group Telekom Malaysia.
The company becomes United’s ‘integrated telecommunications partner" in Malaysia.
Announcing the deal, chief executive David Gill said the partnership was proof of the Glazer family's long-term commitment to the club despite pressure from fans to sell up and talk of a bid from the Red Knights consortium.
"We will be around for the length of this deal and many more in addition to that," Gill said. "This demonstrates the strength of the club. It is a long-term partnership for five years.”
Gill admitted that the green and gold scarves worn by anti-Glazer fans during the team’s 4-0 victory over AC Milan on Wednesday had not gone unnoticed.
"Everyone has the right to protest and there was certainly a lot of green and gold there on Wednesday, you cannot deny that," he added.
But the United chief said that the positive impact the Glazer family had had on the club had been ignored.
"It doesn't get much media coverage but the very fact they have come in and are able to do these deals benefits us," he continued. "We can reinvest that money back into the team."
There could also be spin-offs from the latest sponsorship deal. Dato'Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, chief executive of Telekom Malaysia, said: "Manchester United created a lot of enthusiasm for football when they came on tour last summer.
"Over the course of this deal, I would like to see some of the younger talents in Malaysia go to Manchester United to train and maybe the other way round. That will only help our country to progress."
