India looks set to host a Formula 1 grand prix from next season after officials reached an agreement with the sport’s commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.
The country has been touted as a possible race venue for some time, particularly since the arrival of Vijay Mallya’s Force India team in the F1 world championship.
Now the FIA has said in a statement: “Subject to final approval of the calendar by the World Motor Sport Council, Bernie Ecclestone has informed the FIA that India will host an F1 event in 2011.”
This season’s world championship will have 19 races with the addition of Korea to the schedule, and Ecclestone is also looking to expand the calendar to include Russia and an African country.
"When we speak about the F1 world championship, we are aware that Africa is missing," Ecclestone told the official F1 website. "We had talks a couple of years ago and almost reached a deal but, at the moment, they are so wound up with the football World Cup [that] there was not much point in talking.
"I am sure we will get ahead with Russia. India, as you know, will be there and there are one or two other places that we are interested in."
