Fifa executive committee member Franz Beckenbauer believes it would be “very difficult” for Asian Football Confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam to beat the governing body’s president Sepp Blatter at next year’s election.
Bin Hammam said last month that the “time had come” for an Asian candidate to run for the presidency, although he stopped short of putting himself forward.
Many took that as a sign of his intention to run, but Beckenbauer hopes a compromise can be found.
“It’s a kind of a fight,” Beckenbauer told Arabian Business. “I think it’s very difficult to beat the president, Sepp Blatter. If it comes to a fight between him and Bin Hammam, I don’t know.
“I mean, to have a Fifa president come from Asia, it would [make] history.
“Maybe the two of them will find a compromise. I hope so.”
