London has entered the race to stage the 2015 World Athletics Championships.
It will compete with Chinese capital Beijing and Polish city Chorzow for the right to host the biennial event.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will announce the winner in November.
The IAAF said in a statement: "By the deadline of March 10, letters of intent have been received from Beijing and London, as well as from the Polish city of Chorzow, a city of two million people in the Silesian region. The decision on the 2015 host will be taken at the November 2010 council meeting."
If London wins the right to host the championships, it will have implications for the 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Its future has been the subject of much debate recently, with Premier League side West Ham keen to move in after the 2012 Games.
However, London 2012 chairman Lord Coe has insisted that track and field will remain its primary purpose after the Olympics.
The next World Athletics Championships take place in Daegu, South Korea, in 2011. Russian capital Moscow will host the event in 2013.
