Broadcaster RTL has announced that Michael Schumacher's Formula 1 return at the Bahrain Grand Prix was a big hit with television viewers.
Last weekend’s race was watched by an average audience of 10.5 million Germans, compared to 5.3 million viewers for the season-opener in 2009.
RTL sports chief Manfred Loppe said: "We did expect higher figures but we never dared think they would be that much higher."
The race had a market share of just under 50 per cent and a peak audience of 11.6 million as German Schumacher finished sixth on his comeback after three seasons in retirement.
