UK Athletics (UKA) has said that holding the World Championships in London in 2015 would be a “fantastic legacy” for the Olympic Stadium.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced earlier this week that London will compete with Chinese capital Beijing and Polish city Chorzow for the right to host the biennial event in five years’ time.
The future of the 2012 Olympic Stadium is still to be decided with Premier League football team West Ham keen to move in after the Games.
But The Independent newspaper quotes a UKA spokesman as saying: "It [the 2015 World Athletics Championships] will be a fantastic legacy for the stadium in London three years after the Olympic Games.”
UKA will make a presentation in September to the IAAF, who will make a final decision at its council meeting in November.
"We have shown that we can put on brilliant athletics events with the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace and the British Grand Prix in Gateshead," the spokesman added.
"The IAAF ranked the indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham as the best one around. With 2012 coming up, we are confident we can put on a great event."
