New Formula 1 team Lotus Racing is reportedly close to signing a sponsorship deal with Brazilian oil giant Petrobras.
Some sources in Brazil claim that a deal has already been done, while an official for the Rio-based company told UOL Esporte that a partnership was “under consideration”.
If a deal is agreed, Lotus’s cars could feature Petrobras branding from the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona in early May.
Petrobras sponsored the Williams F1 team between 1998 and 2008, and is said to have been in talks with other teams about a 2010 deal.
Petrobras, which has also been linked with a naming rights deal for Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium, had a contract in place to sponsor and supply Honda in 2009 before the Japanese manufacturer withdrew from the sport.
Lotus recently signed a sponsorship deal with news network CNN.
