The French town of Annecy will spend more than $2bn upgrading its transport infrastructure if it is chosen to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, its bid book has revealed.
Annecy is competing against Munich and Pyeongchang for the right to host the Games in eight years’ time and all three submitted their bid documents to the International Olympic Committee last week.
Annecy outlined plans for several transportation improvements. It will spend $646m on infrastructure already planned, $332m on additional items required for the Games and $1.159bn for improvements to existing infrastructure. A total of $2.137bn is the overall cost of the transportation plan.
The total cost of the bid process will be $21m, including $7m for the applicant phase and an additional $14m to complete the candidate phase if Annecy is shortlisted in June. $13.5m will be publicly funded.
The bid committee expects $1.13bn total operating revenue, including $629m from sponsorships and $215m from ticket sales assuming an 85 per cent sell out of available tickets.
A total of $419m is budgeted for venue construction, including $96.5m – the highest single amount – for speed skating and $77.5m for men’s ice hockey.
