New Zealand's foreign minister has said that the country may never be able to afford to stage the Rugby World Cup again because hosting next year’s competition is proving to be so expensive.
Martin McCully has admitted that 2011 may be the last time "our small country of 4 million people can afford to host a Rugby World Cup".
Speaking at a reception to promote the tournament, he added that the World Cup is expected to run a loss of about NZ$28m (£13.2m).
New Zealand's federal government recently withdrew support for Auckland's bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games because the event projected a loss of about NZ$420m.
New Zealand co-hosted the inaugural World Cup with Australia in 1987.
