No decision will be made on plans to revise the ‘crown jewels’ list of free-to-air sporting events until after the general election on May 6, it has been announced.
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) had been due to make a decision on the future of events such as the home Ashes Test series in the coming weeks.
But the DCMS said: "There will be no announcement in advance of the election.”
Former Football Association executive director David Davies made a number of recommendations following a review of the current list of protected events.
He proposed that home cricket Ashes series between England and Australia, England's football qualifying matches, golf's Open Championship, Wimbledon and the Rugby World Cup should be added to the ‘crown jewels’ list.
However, his findings did not go down well with some sports governing bodies – particularly the England & Wales Cricket Board – who argued that the loss of revenue from selling rights to pay-TV broadcasters such as Sky would slash the funding available for grassroots sport.
