The Boston Red Sox have overtaken the New York Mets to become the second-most valuable team in Major League Baseball behind the New York Yankees.
Forbes Magazine says the Yankees are worth $1.6bn, almost double the $870m valuation of the Red Sox.
The Mets’ value fell by 6 per cent last year to $858m, even though the team moved into a new stadium. It was the only club in the top 15 to drop in value.
The Yankees had by far the most revenue of any team last season with $441m, according to Forbes.
The average major league team now is worth $491m – an increase of 2 per cent on 2008 despite the recession.
