Liverpool will this week confirm that British Airways chairman Martin Broughton has been brought in to find a buyer for the club.
Broughton will join Liverpool as an independent non-executive chairman, replacing owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who were co-chairmen. The Americans hope the move will present a united front to potential buyers.
Barclays Capital has also reportedly agreed to step in to renew the club's debt facilities and provide it with new funds. The bank has been mandated to sell the club.
Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has been trying to find new investors for several months with the help of investment banks Merrill Lynch and Rothschilds.
Last week, Hicks and Gillett rejected a £100m offer for a 40 per cent stake in the club from the Rhone Group, a New-York based private equity firm.
Broughton has previously chaired the British Horseracing Board and is also a former chairman of British American Tobacco, and the Confederation of British Industry.
