The president of Hong Kong’s Olympic Committee Timothy Fok has called for the Government and the public to support its bid to host the Asian Games in 2019.
Hong Kong staged the East Asian Games at the end of last year – the first time it had ever hosted an international multi-sport event.
It spent HK$1bn on upgrading venues for the Games but only two were newly built – and Fok believes the Asian Games would act as a catalyst for further investment in Hong Kong’s sporting infrastructure.
“The deadline for launching a bid for the 2019 or 2023 Asian Games has been postponed from the end of March to the end of June, so we have another three months to persuade our government, legislators and citizens,” he said.
“Our sports facilities have to be upgraded whether we bid for the Asian Games or not. Should we decide to bid, the venues to be constructed or improved will be a legacy for our residents, especially for the younger generation.”
