The Bulgarian city of Sofia has abandoned plans to bid for the 2016 Youth Winter Olympics because of the recession.
The Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) said on Wednesday (April 14) that "not all conditions set by the IOC can be fulfilled” – and that it would instead bid for the 2020 event.
The BOC announced last year that Sofia would bid for the 2016 Games and won encouragement from International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.
But it decided that the cost of building and upgrading venues would be too great following the economic downturn.
