World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn has announced a new World Seniors Championship featuring legends such as Alex Higgins and Steve Davies as part of his plans to reinvigorate interest in the sport.
Hearn hopes the event, which will take place in Bradford between November 5 and 7, will help return snooker to its glory days of the 1980s, when 18.5 million people tuned in to watch the World Championship final between Davis and Dennis Taylor.
Joe Johnson is another of the former world champions who will take part in the World Seniors Championship – and he was heavily involved in making the event happen.
Johnson, the 1986 Crucible champion, said: "I have been working very hard to pull this concept together and I am glad that with World Snooker's help we are making it a reality.
"I cannot wait to get out on the floor and battle it out with my old friends and adversaries. Snooker fans have been crying out for this type of event and I am sure that we will do our best to put on an entertaining championship."
