Celtic and Rangers could play an Old Firm game outside of Glasgow for the first time this summer after they were approached about a potentially lucrative pre-season friendly in the United States.
The idea is thought to be the brainchild of a US promotions company and would tie in with both clubs’ planned tours of North America in July.
The venue for the game would likely be the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, the home of the NFL's New England Patriots and Major League Soccer side New England Revolution. Celtic played a friendly against the Revolution there in July 2006.
Just over 16,000 spectators watched that match, but organisers believe an Old Firm game would attract a crowd closer to the stadium's 68,750 capacity, generating much-needed revenue for both clubs.
A similar proposal was made six years ago, with Australia as the host country, but no agreement was reached.
