French president Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed that the Government will do everything in its power to help Annecy win the race to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Sarkozy had already confirmed his support in a March 5 letter to International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge and he said during a speech to the Savoy region at the end of last week: "Annecy's victory will be the victory of the entire nation, standing behind you.
"The government will do everything possible, you can be sure, so that Annecy, applicant for the 2018 Winter Olympics, will be chosen.”
Annecy is competing with the German city of Munich and South Korea’s PyeongChang for the right to host the 2018 Games.
Annecy 2018 chief executive Edgar Grospiron added: "We are proud that the French chief of state is clearly backing Annecy 2018 and we are particularly moved that he made his announcement on the occasion of such a historic event for France [the 150th anniversary of the Savoy area becoming French].”
The IOC will choose the host city on July 6, 2011.
